Connection and reflection go hand in hand, especially as we make the commitment and determination to live more with a sense of peace and balance. The early morning movement classes were held on a grassy area overlooking the Caribbean. We were blessed as a group with a thick grass under our feet through which we could connect to the earth. A slight, cool breeze and the warmth of the sun which allowed us to bring all our senses alive. We could coordinate our breaths to reverse ingrained patterns and focused on deep breaths where the exhalation was slightly longer than the inhale. There were several people who had never engaged in these practices and it was heart warming to see them even for a moment allow themselves to be openheartedly in the moment.
This was a theme throughout the conference. Plenary speakers whom legal systems had failed challenged the participants to honestly assess how and why they were doing work that has life-long impact on individuals. Sharing how compassion and being heard by others opened opportunities to begin to live their lives to the fullest. Authentically showing up, without judgment, using wisdom and compassion as ones guides can build he trust needed for a young child to reach out for help or a distrusting teen to allow love in their lives.
The interaction during the session on thriving as a human being was consistent with what I had experiences from the diversity of groups with whom I have shared this discussion. I get to bear witness to people of all ages, education and different places in life answer the four questions in a consistent manner, reflect on whether they are exercising self compassion and also contemplate if they are living in alignment with ethical and moral values.
The Supervised Visitation Network conference in Puerto Rico was a resounding success, with over 130 participants from the continental United States and US Virgin Islands enjoying amazing plenary speakers, interactive workshops, and delicious local cuisine. Held at the El Conquistador Resort, the venue offered a perfect setting for networking on a veranda overlooking the Caribbean.Special recognition goes to Joe Nullet, CAE, the Executive Director, Samantha Alvarez Benowitz, LCSW, the SVN Board President, and the entire board for their dedication to making the conference a success. Gratitude is also extended to the staff for their attentive support of all participants.
The plenary led by Gaelin Elmore focused on the importance of human connection and compassion. Sharing his life story and emphasizing that when people show up, listen and commit to another, people will feel authentically supported and change will happen. Neveah Gilmore shared her story in vivd detail, emphasizing when children are not heard how trauma may impact their lives for years.
During the event, I had the privilege of leading two movement and breath classes near a bluff, harnessing the stunning energy and views to guide our practice. Aligning our movements with breath, we focused on calming our bodies and rejuvenating our spirits.
Furthermore, I facilitated a session on cultivating a better work-life balance through introspection and thriving techniques to boost our well-being and support others. Additionally, I took part in a judicial panel alongside Judge Gayl Branum Carr, Judge Hiram Pugh-Lugo, and Judge Robert Hofmann, the current President of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. We addressed inquiries regarding supervised visitation from a judicial standpoint. Joe's exceptional organizational skills ensured a smooth flow of the event, and the participants posed thought-provoking questions, enriching the discussions.
