East High Freshman Dive Deep

Updated: Nov 22, 2025

I Spent the day with freshmen students at East high school in Pueblo sharing stories and soliciting their opinions on a variety of issues related to mental well-being. Being retired affords me the flexibility to be honest in sharing obstacles that I faced throughout my life. There are logical ethical and practical reasons to keep personal stories private, but sharing one’s vulnerabilities allows deeper connection by giving others permission to share their own.

Thank you to Amanda Coatney for reaching out and bring me in to spend time with 6 periods of freshman seminar students. Talking about the system and how it is supposed to function correctly is extremely important in these times.

When we drive a car and hear certain noises, we have a tendency to ignore the chatter because we don’t have a realization as to what the car is trying to tell us. If we ride with a trained mechanic, they can share with us their observations and encourage that certain remedial actions be taken before we end up broken down on the side of the road. It’s easy to figure out if there’s something wrong when the car won’t move any longer.
