International Supervised Visitation Conference session on Judicial Decision Making when Coercive Control exists

I had the honor to present to supervise visitation providers from different provinces in Canada at the international supervise visitation center conference held in Niagara Falls, Canada, on October 30, 2025. We had an extremely productive three hours as we discussed the nuances of course of control and the impact of the law and judicial decision-making.

By reflecting on how our own life experiences, perceptions of our duties at work, and the complexities of these cases as we navigate issues related around course of control in our respective professions, we can begin to realize that our judgments about why judges do or don’t do things are clouded by misinformation at our own perceptions.

For the past seven years, I’ve spent an extensive amount of time at the women’s prison located at Lavista correctional facilitating a DV support group which is morphed into a life skills course. I have learned so much about the impact of trauma on people’s lives and share that with every group that I speak before to give a voice to the people who are incarcerated. Weaving this into my presentations, has allowed me to share my insights with others.

Looking forward to doing a similar presentation at the supervised visitation national conference to bail in New Orleans in May, 2026, look forward to seeing people there. Also, I am on the board of supervised visitation network and I’m so proud to be with such an amazing group of dedicated professionals.
