Judicial Wellbeing and Ethics. National Center for State Courts Ethics College

I had a fantastic opportunity to teach at the National College on Judicial Ethics in Louisville, Kentucky, for the National Center for State Courts. The NCSC gathers both new and experienced members of state judicial discipline boards to discuss emerging topics in this crucial area. During this conference, I had the honor of meeting three members of the Board in Colorado, including Ann Mangiardi, the Executive Director.

The first session was a panel discussion on Judicial Wellbeing and Ethics, where I was joined by Adrienne Meiring, Executive Director of Judicial and Attorney Regulation, along with Joe Scally from Illinois LAP. It was a highly interactive session as participants were introduced to the negative effects of the work on judges. We also discussed the importance of systemic support for judicial well-being as a fundamental necessity to providing the tools necessary to enhance judicial resilience. Introducing this audience from across the country to the Nauru Declaration enhances the process of enlightening people both within and outside the judicial system about the importance of well-being and integrity in pursuing fair and just resolutions to people’s issues.

The second topic was presented on both days of the conference and was well attended by a diverse audience of judicial officers and lay members of the boards. When to disclose a conflict issue sua sponte and when it is appropriate to disqualify are very hot topics in the legal field. Marla N. Greenstein, Executive Director of the Alaska Commission on Judicial Discipline, and Circuit Judge Mitch Perry from Louisville, who also serves on the Kentucky Judicial Conduct Commission, brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to this issue.

I am looking forward to strengthening all the connections made and promoting these issues at every level and opportunity available!
