Had an engaging discussion at the Middle Atlantic States Correctional Assoc (MASCA) conference in Dover, Delaware, diving into Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s book, “Whole Brain Living.” Exploring the impact of neuroplasticity and real-life reactions, correctional professionals delved into how understanding Dr. Bolte-Taylor’s concepts enhances their interactions with others daily. Reflecting on the four characters that shape our lives, this group embraced the potential for personal growth and emotional intelligence.
Recognizing and understanding the concept of neuroplasticity in correctional settings is crucial, as it introduces hope when working with incarcerated individuals. Often, we assume that people cannot change and dismiss them mentally and emotionally. However, no one can predict when someone will experience a moment of realization that leads to significant change. I have been fortunate to witness this process, though it never happens overnight. We must cultivate patience and work on ourselves and those we interact
, without expectations, and be ready to celebrate when individuals overcome their trauma, psychological harm, and emotional pain as it occurs.
